(CNN)It only takes a few seconds to search for something on someone’s Twitter account. With the right terms and a little bit of intuition, one may even find something that threatens to take down an entire career. “It used to be that the overarching brand had more power than the individual and that is no longer true,” Harrington says. “The majority of these ‘called-on-the-carpet’ moments come from personalities that are trying to have a personal voice but are still at the mercy of the overarching brands, producers or channels for their income and popularity.” Why they get caught It’s also common wisdom that certain language is not going to play well with the general public. Hacker who took down entire nation’s internet is jailed

London (CNN)A British hacker whose cyberattacks took the nation of Liberia offline has been jailed for almost three years. While living in Cyprus, Kaye used a botnet he had created to trigger repeated distributed denial of service (DDoS) requests on Lonestar, causing the company to spend around $600,000 in remedial action. The additional impact of customers leaving the network caused the company to lose tens of millions of dollars in lost revenue, the NCA added. Following his arrest in February 2017, Kaye was extradited to Germany, where he also admitted to attacks on Deutsche Telekom that affected around 1 million customers in November 2016. “Daniel Kaye was operating as a highly skilled and capable hacker-for-hire,” Mike Hulett, Head of Operations …

BROOKLYN, N.Y. ― Supporters of Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) held over 400 house parties in all 50 states and Puerto Rico on Saturday afternoon calling on Sanders to run for president again in 2020. He isn’t in this race yet,” Brezler said. Although Sanders and his campaign team were not directly involved in Saturday’s events, the house parties were …

Why do vegans attract such hatred?

London (CNN)Ever since Greggs announced its new vegan sausage roll on January 2, the Internet has been ablaze with opposing opinions. Many have been delighted, with many outlets of the UK fast-food chain selling out of the new arrival by lunchtime. Others however, haven’t been so thrilled. Virtue-signalling is a now-stale phrase born in 2015, which describes people who publicly highlight their support for good causes, but care more about you noticing how worthy they are than the cause itself. Recently, an opposing phenomenon has also gained traction. Performative contempt for anything unfamiliar is a tried and tested means of getting attention for a certain kind of commenter. They pick a target whose actually-harmless behavior appears to threaten some notion …

Apple brings iTunes to Samsung TVs as it seeks new revenue

Las Vegas (CNN Business)Apple is opening up its ecosystem to one of its biggest rivals by giving owners of Samsung TVs direct access to iTunes content. Apple showed signs of loosening its grip in November when it announced that Amazon’s (AMZN) Echo devices would support Apple Music. The two companies also struck a deal that allows Amazon to sell Apple devices directly, in exchange for cracking down on unauthorized third-party sellers on the site. A year earlier, Apple finally allowed the Prime Video app on Apple TV. Still, a deal with Samsung is even more interesting, as the giant smartphone makers have a complicated history. They spent years locked in a costly legal battle over patents after Apple claimed Samsung …

Border wall would do nothing to stop terrorism. And there is no national emergency.

(CNN)The Trump administration is framing the necessity of a southern border wall, in part, as a response to a national security emergency involving terrorists. This is a barrel of bunkum and balderdash served with generous helpings of hogwash. This decline tracks with the declining fortunes of ISIS. When it controlled territory the size of the United Kingdom, thousands of Islamist militants joined or attempted to join ISIS, including from the United States. Now the geographical caliphate is almost entirely gone and ISIS recruitment has slowed to a trickle. In the United States since the 9/11 attacks, 455 jihadist terrorists have been charged or convicted or died before they faced trial. Not one of these terrorists crossed the southern border. It …

The US-China tech war is getting worse. Apple is paying the price

Huawei’s secret weapon, HiSilicon — its semiconductor design arm — has begun designing dedicated smartphone chipsets that now give Huawei phones capabilities near or on par with the iPhone. Fabricated by Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Corporation (TSMC), Huawei’s neural network processors and other custom chips have given the Chinese firm the ability to compete in terms of cost and features in a way that was unimaginable even two years ago. Trump’s misplaced economic policies could sink the …

(CNN)Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein, whose office manages the Russia investigation, is planning to leave the Justice Department shortly after William Barr, the President’s nominee for attorney general, is confirmed, a source familiar with his thinking said. Barr’s Senate confirmation hearing begins January 15, which means a confirmation vote, at the earliest, could occur in mid-February. A source told CNN that Barr made it clear to the White House that he wanted his own deputy — a request that was honored the last time he served as attorney general under President George H.W. Bush. “The attorney general’s balls are in the deputy attorney general’s pocket, and I’m not putting my balls in anyone’s pocket I don’t know,” Barr recalled saying …
