Congress should follow California’s lead in protecting consumers

(CNN)Many aspects of privacy protection in our country are broken and Congress is not doing its part to fix them. For example, when hackers obtained the private information of 148 million Americans in the 2017 Equifax breach, Congress did virtually nothing — not even coming close to voting on bills, like the proposed Data Breach Prevention and Compensation Act, which would have done more to protect consumer information in the hands of credit bureaus. But the California law may never take effect. Businesses are urging the Congress that did little after the Equifax breach to pass a federal privacy law to protect companies from state privacy laws. Businesses argue that complying with the laws of different states is expensive. It …

Zimbabwe shuts down social media as UN slams military crackdown

Harare, Zimbabwe (CNN)Zimbabweans spent most of Friday without internet after the government ordered the country’s biggest mobile operator to shut down service again. A spokeswoman for UNHCR, the United Nations Refugee Agency, Ravina Shamdasani, expressed concern Friday over reports of “excessive use of force, including live ammunition” by security forces, and called on the government to “find ways of engaging with the population about their legitimate grievances.” The United States embassy in Harare also criticized the “disproportionate use of force” in a statement on Thursday, saying it was “alarmed by credible reports that security forces were targeting and beating political activists and labor leaders.” Days of deadly protests were triggered by President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s announcement of a 150% increase in …

SpaceX ditches plans to develop Mars spaceship at Los Angeles port

New York (CNN Business)SpaceX has abandoned plans to open up shop at the Port of Los Angeles. Last year, a board of harbor commissioners approved SpaceX’s plan to renovate an area of the port that had been vacant since 2005. Under the terms of the deal, SpaceX would have avoided rent payments for the facility for more than two decades through $40 million in rent credits for the renovations. SpaceX said in a statement Wednesday that it abandoned the port plan in order to “streamline operations.” LA Councilman Joe Buscaino said Wednesday that he was “crushed” that SpaceX had decided to pull out of the deal. “I feel confident that other innovators will see the huge value they get” at …

What else belongs in a smart home? Here for 11 smart devices you never knew about before now. What makes a smart thermostat “smart?” Let’s start at the beginning. Set the temperature from anywhere Traditional thermostats work great, but only if you’re around to adjust them. Some thermostats can be programmed, but if you couldn’t figure out a VCR, you may struggle with this function, and you may forget to modify those settings as the seasons change. The main selling point of any smart device is internet connectivity, which means you can change the thermostat’s settings from practically anywhere. You can use your thermostat’s mobile app, or a web browser, or even a virtual assistant like Amazon Alexa or Google …

No escape as ‘snow day’ becomes ‘e-learning day’

They are known as “e-learning days”, which certainly sounds less fun than a snow day. ‘Let the kids enjoy it’ Teachers are also losing their snow days and instead will be expected to be on hand to take a virtual register and answer students’ questions online. A pilot programme in a school district in Anderson County, South Carolina has supplied students with electronic tablets loaded with assignments to complete in the event of a school closure. Image copyright Getty Images There are also so-called “blizzard bags”, with assignments that are sent home with children ahead of an expected snow closure. But Mr Roth says it is not sufficient as a replacement. “I think we still need the class time to …

Internet shutdowns aren’t just Africa’s problem. They’re happening worldwide

Hong Kong (CNN)When Hong Kong police fired tear gas at peaceful pro-democracy protesters in 2014, the news moved swiftly through social media. Photos and videos of mostly student demonstrators being gassed helped fuel the outrage that ultimately drove hundreds of thousands of people into the streets. Such tactics show no signs of slowing — there have been more internet shutdowns every year for the past three years — and may become the new normal as countries around the world attempt to clamp down on online dissent. Connection cut After protests broke out over a sharp fuel price hike this week, Zimbabwe’s government ordered a three-day internet shutdown — with police also firing tear gas at demonstrators from a helicopter and …

‘It is possible to be Muslim and a lesbian’

Miriam* grew up in a traditional Muslim family in Bristol where her grandfather “ruled the roost”, with Islamic sermons and prayers five times a day. Fearful as she was of being caught out, these relationships gave Miriam freedom. “I made sure that my girlfriends didn’t visibly mark me, so I didn’t come home with [love bites] on my neck. But while I was there, it was thrilling – I thought, ‘Oh my god, I’m doing this, I’m having a sexual experience with another woman, this is amazing’. “At the time, the people I met didn’t question the fact it was long distance. One woman in particular I only saw every other month. I used to go up on the train, …

How to keep AI from turning into the Terminator

(CNN)Artificial intelligence (AI) has long occupied an outsized role in our collective imagination, in everything from pulp science fiction novels to James Cameron blockbusters. When AI is the antagonist, it is corporeal and impossible to overlook, like the Terminator. Even in the real world, discussions about rogue technology tend to focus on the overt and dramatic, such as Elon Musk’s exhortations on Twitter that the dangers of AI rival the dangers of nuclear weapons. But even if you don’t worry about it for yourself, there is growing evidence that these systems tend to radicalize and polarize. Last year, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill researcher Zeynep Tufekci dubbed YouTube “the Great Radicalizer”: view one anti-vaccination video, and YouTube will …

Murdered journalists were tracked by police with shadowy Russian links, evidence shows

(CNN)New evidence shows that three Russian journalists killed in the Central African Republic last year were victims of a well-planned ambush involving a senior police officer with shadowy Russian connections — and they were tracked from the moment they arrived in the country. Now, six months later, there is evidence that far from being the victims of a random attack, the murder of the trio was carefully planned. The day they were killed, their driver was in regular communication with a senior CAR police officer, according to call logs seen by CNN. That officer followed the journalists in another vehicle as they drove north from Bangui, the capital of CAR. A major in the national gendarmerie, the officer is closely …

5 things to know for January 8: Shutdown, Brexit, Cyntoia Brown, Cuba, screen time

(CNN) 1. Government shutdown President Trump takes his battle to build a border wall into overdrive tonight. He’ll address the nation in prime time in his first Oval Office address, and he’s expected to describe the situation on the southern border with Mexico as a national security crisis. (There are already 31 active national emergencies, some dating back to the Clinton administration.) Trump will follow that up with a trip to the border later this week. Political observers think the President is trying to break the logjam with Democrats over his $5 billion border wall funding request — and the government shutdown it’s created — by building a case to bypass Congress for the money and use Defense Department funds …
