Outspoken journalist Maria Ressa hit with new law suit in ‘absurd legal attack’

(CNN)Award-winning journalist Maria Ressa has been indicted for a second time, in a move widely criticized by rights groups as an attempt to stifle press freedoms in the Philippines. Philippine government threatening Rappler Journalist advocacy group Reporters Without Borders also condemned the move in a tweet. “The judicial harassment used by (the) Duterte government to persecute Rappler and Maria Ressa is grotesque. Government housing delivery plan ‘flawed’

The Local Government Association (LGA) said the current formula did not take into account the needs of local communities. ‘Free-for-all’ Local authorities – by law – need to have an up-to-date plan for building new homes. If they are unable to prove that they have a five-year supply of land for housing, developers have greater freedoms to build where they want. The NAO points out that this risks ill-suited developments, while the LGA says it risks a “free-for-all”. The NAO says that between 2005-06 and 2017-18, 177,000 new homes per year were built on average, with the number never rising above 224,000. To meet its ambition for 300,000 homes a year, the department will need to oversee a 69% increase …

China just quietly wrote off a chunk of Cameroon’s debt. Why the secrecy?

(CNN)When top Chinese diplomat Yang Jiechi met Cameroon President Paul Biya in the capital Yaounde last month and wrote off a chunk of the African country’s debt, the deal very nearly went unnoticed. But while the news report was wrong, its release did force the Chinese government to speak publicly about what type of deal had been reached. Last week, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Hua Chunying told CNN: “China agreed to waive the interest-free inter-governmental debt that Cameroon had not paid back by the end of 2018.” That debt was worth $78.4 million. Cameroon’s total debt is 5.8 trillion Central African CFA francs ($10 billion), about a third of which is owed to China, according to the International Monetary Fund. …

Ban mobiles at dinner time – medical chiefs

UK ‘could ban’ social media over suicide images Almost half of UK internet users ‘harmed’ Image copyright Getty Images Dame Sally also wants social media companies to develop better algorithms that push positive content to users. This has already been done for users who search for content that could potentially radicalise them. Instead of being fed material that promotes terrorism, users get content that aims to de-radicalise. Dame Sally said the same thing could happen when people searched for “self-harm” or “suicide”. “We would like to see content that promotes help-lines and where to go for support,” she said. And she warned if industry did not act, …

5 Impactful Lessons You Should Have Learned From Heartbreak

Breaking Up 5 Impactful Lessons You Should Have Learned From Heartbreak Natalie Greagor Updated February 5, 2019 I’d like to describe some of our failed relationships like this: We meet someone. We see red flags. We ignore the red flags because we see the good or potential in them. We begin to try hard to get them to see this potential for themselves. We show how supportive we are to them but they still won’t see it. They begin to show more signs of how much of a selfish person they are, but by now we are attached. We still see the good and imagine how things should be. Instead of moving on, we push to get what we want. By …

The King Of Comedy: A Horror Movie About Celebrity Worship

TV + Movies / The very next shot shows Rupert with a gun, ready to kidnap Jerry and force him to allow him on his show at the risk of being murdered. As director Martin Scorsese puts it regarding Rupert’s ruthless and pathetic quest for validation through fame: …he becomes successful without being good. He’s good enough. That’s the most unsettling part, that he’s good enough….There are so many Ruperts around us. There’s so much dilution, and democratizing of what quality is, for better or for worse….We knew we were commenting on the culture at that time, but not thinking that it would blow up into what it is now. is the “last really great film about culture,” says comedian …

The Nest in my son’s room was acting weird. Here’s what I did next

New York (CNN Business)Earlier this week, members of a popular New York-based Facebook moms’ group swapped stories about their indoor Nest cameras acting strangely. On Friday, Google told CNN Business a bug had impacted some of its Nest indoor and outdoor cameras from Saturday, January 25 through Thursday, January 30. The glitch caused the cameras to behave as if someone was accessing the live view mode — turning on the green indicator light — when in fact they weren’t. The issue has since been resolved, according to the company. “We’re aware of an issue that caused a small amount of Nest cameras to incorrectly indicate they were being viewed even after the live stream was closed,” a Google spokesperson said …

Patsy Kane, executive head teacher at the Education and Leadership Trust in Manchester, said Mr Gibb’s plan was “missing the point on just how fantastically useful mobile phones can be for learning.” She told BBC Breakfast her multi-academy trust encourages the responsible use of smartphones during lessons and that teachers do remove the devices if they are used inappropriately during school time. She added: “There’s a fantastic range of apps now for revision – and the students are really motivated to use them.” Should phones be allowed in schools?
