What The Hell Is This Giant Spinning Ice Disk That Just Appeared In Maine?

An unusual feature has intrigued and enthralled the world since suddenly appearing – or at least becoming Internet famous – this week in Maine. A huge spinning ice disk has formed in the Presumpscot River in the city of Westbrook, and people looking for explanations are claiming everything from aliens and crop circles to a giant duck Lazy Susan. Alas, it may not be aliens (we’ll let you know when it is), but it is a fabulously photogenic example of a rare natural phenomenon, one that stumped scientists for years. This one is particularly large, stretching about 100 meters (300 feet) across. According to the New York Times, only one or two are reported a year in the US, and …

What He Wants For Valentine’s Day This Year Betches

Oh god. Oh no. It’s here. Cthulhu Valentine’s Day has arisen from its syrup-coated Hallmark basement lair to once again assault our eyeballs with pink and red flowers, crappy candy, balloons, and mass-produced stuffed animals painstakingly stitched together by child slaves. This day of sappy Instagram captions, overcrowded restaurants, lackluster sex, and general disappointment is almost upon us. If you, like many halves of whole couples, are, for some reason, looking forward to the idea of this made-up holiday, congratulations and good luck. Shopping for men during Valentine’s Day is about as easy as pretending to be excited about anything after age 30. I’m not bitter, you’re bitter. “How am I supposed to figure out what he wants for Valentine’s Day??!” – Things I …

Morgellons Disease: Is It Real, Or Just Really Crazy?

Jerome London Updated January 22, 2019 Morgellons Disease is a condition where sufferers claim that mysterious fibers grow out of sores in their skin. Most medical professionals claim it’s a delusional disorder, but an increasing body of work says these fibers may be a legitimate offshoot of Lyme Disease. So is Morgellons real, or just really crazy? What Is Morgellons Disease? In 2001, a mother and biologist named Mary Leitao took her toddler son to the doctor due to his recurring lip sores. The boy had been complaining that bugs were crawling under his skin. After eight visits to eight different doctors, no one had any other explanation besides suggesting that Mary was mentally ill and was using her son …

Congress should follow California’s lead in protecting consumers

(CNN)Many aspects of privacy protection in our country are broken and Congress is not doing its part to fix them. For example, when hackers obtained the private information of 148 million Americans in the 2017 Equifax breach, Congress did virtually nothing — not even coming close to voting on bills, like the proposed Data Breach Prevention and Compensation Act, which would have done more to protect consumer information in the hands of credit bureaus. But the California law may never take effect. Businesses are urging the Congress that did little after the Equifax breach to pass a federal privacy law to protect companies from state privacy laws. Businesses argue that complying with the laws of different states is expensive. It …

Zimbabwe shuts down social media as UN slams military crackdown

Harare, Zimbabwe (CNN)Zimbabweans spent most of Friday without internet after the government ordered the country’s biggest mobile operator to shut down service again. A spokeswoman for UNHCR, the United Nations Refugee Agency, Ravina Shamdasani, expressed concern Friday over reports of “excessive use of force, including live ammunition” by security forces, and called on the government to “find ways of engaging with the population about their legitimate grievances.” The United States embassy in Harare also criticized the “disproportionate use of force” in a statement on Thursday, saying it was “alarmed by credible reports that security forces were targeting and beating political activists and labor leaders.” Days of deadly protests were triggered by President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s announcement of a 150% increase in …

SpaceX ditches plans to develop Mars spaceship at Los Angeles port

New York (CNN Business)SpaceX has abandoned plans to open up shop at the Port of Los Angeles. Last year, a board of harbor commissioners approved SpaceX’s plan to renovate an area of the port that had been vacant since 2005. Under the terms of the deal, SpaceX would have avoided rent payments for the facility for more than two decades through $40 million in rent credits for the renovations. SpaceX said in a statement Wednesday that it abandoned the port plan in order to “streamline operations.” LA Councilman Joe Buscaino said Wednesday that he was “crushed” that SpaceX had decided to pull out of the deal. “I feel confident that other innovators will see the huge value they get” at …

No escape as ‘snow day’ becomes ‘e-learning day’
